Teddy Kumpel has been a sought after guitar slinger for artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Feist, Marshall Crenshaw and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors as well as a respected producer/mixer in NY's fertile indie rock scene. Lately Teddy has been on fire with his trio, I mean... Orchestra, mixing his song writing, improvisations and deep funk pocket. The rotating cast keeps things fresh and showcases Kumpel's humorous lyrics, mad guitar skills and instantaneous production saavy.
Aside from his work on films such as the 2010 Emmy award winning score on the HBO film "Temle Grandin" and his co-production of the debut album for artist Anna F in Austria which won the Amadeus RECORD OF THE YEAR and Best Pop/Rock record of the year awards in 2010, Teddy has worked with artists as diverse as Feist, Rickie Lee Jones, Nine Inch Nails, Marshall Crenshaw, David Grisman, Laura Branigan, Teddy Thompson, Ana Egge, Billy Martin, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Chris Brown and Kate Fenner, Luther Wright and the Wrongs, Megan Palmer, Sharissa, Saul Zonana, John Robinson, Michael Bland, Omar Hakim, Kenny Wollesen's marching band, Janet Jackson, Paquito D'Rivera, Jenny Scheinman, Jonah Smith, Ric Firebracci, Will Lee, The Zen Tricksters, Jim Pin, Funk Filharmonik, Michael Blake and Blake Tartare, Toots Hibbert, Toots Thielmans, Frankie Paul, Timothy "Speed" Levitch, Chris Barron, Aaron Comess and Eric Schenkman of the Spin Doctors, Arnie Lawrence, Martha Redbone, Goodie Mob, Sex Mob, Tony Scherr, Tower of Power, Leslie Mendelson, Clark Gayton's Explorations in Dub, Spottiswoode and His Enemies, Frankie Paul, Dennis Brown, The Barbarians, The Supremes, Mbalafunk, India Arie and many feature film scores composed by his long time pal and Emmy winner Alex Wurman including "Anchorman", "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and "Taladega Nights".
Teddy Kumpel is an alumnus of the University of Miami Studio Music and Jazz program, a respected producer/mixer who regularly contributes to NYC's fertile indie rock and jazz scenes, a guitarist extraordinaire with more than 20 major motion pictures, 15 plus major label records and extensive touring experience to his credit. He is also an EMI music publishing staff writer.
Teddy was born of a musical family. His grandmother Elsie performed piano improvisations at silent movies in the 1920's, his mother, Carol, attended the Eastman School of Music for classical piano and his father, Paul, liked to fiddle around with singing and playing show tunes on the piano as well as barbershop quartet music. The only records his parents had while he was growing up were The Beatles: 'Revolver', 'Oliver: soundtrack', Miles Davis and Gil Evans '+19', Tom Leher and Mahalia Jackson. While at the University of Miami, Teddy was the guitarist in the prestigious Concert Jazz band. In high school, Teddy was chosen as the New York All State NYSMA Jazz guitarist at the tender age of 16.
Teddy's discography reflects that fact that he is comfortable with the eccentric and the mainstream equally. His own music straddles the line between roots and blues, songwriting, jam band, guitar hero and avant funkster. Teddy's vast experience with guitar effects is showcased in his newest group the Teddy Kumpel Orchestra (TKO), a trio with Saturday Night Live drummer, Shawn Pelton and bassist extraordinaire, Tim LeFebvre. Teddy's unique take on live looping and texturally advanced use of the Line 6 M13 has been wowing audiences in New York and elsewhere for the last couple of years.
Aside from all that, Teddy produced a record for the kids band "Creation" in 2005 that raised $100,000 to build a school in Mali, Africa and led the group to later become part of the Clinton Global initiative and We Are Family Foundation.
"Teddy is not as dumb as I look. He's an effects monster, a lick meister who leaves a cool, refreshing taste in your ears."
"Teddy is a soulful and creative muso.."
“Teddy has a great talent on the instrument... His work as a guitarist, music-maker, soundmaker continues to grow and expand. He's playing better than ever!!!”
“Teddy is the best of both worlds!"
